Japanese Garden Nieuwerkerk
Yokoso Japanese Gardens was assigned to design Japanese style buildings to replace old existing buildings in the garden of a client in Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel, Holland. The existing old barn will be replaced with a small Japanese house called Nagasu with a small wooden veranda in the front called Engawa. From the Nagasu one can follow a winding path over the dry river to the Koshikake. A Koshikake is a garden bench with a roof which offers a beautiful view of the garden. According to Japanese tradition, a Koshikake is used as a waiting spot for the tea ceremony. Further into the garden a firewood and garden tool storage will be realized called Sutoreji. At the head end of the Sutoreji we designed a spot for an antique Japanese Nuresagi Gata lantern.

All of these wooden construction will be hand made with untreated Western Red Cedar wood. This type of wood is very durable and turns to beautiful silver gray color over time. All the visible connections are realized by means of traditional Japanese techniques and the invisible joints are made using modern screw connections.
